Cleaning Bow Hair?

The best, and only, way to clean your bow hair is to use denatured alcohol and Kleenex. There are two kinds of denatured alcohol: wood and ethyl; ethyl (190-200 proof grain) is the best. In some states it's available only in liquor stores. Other denatured alcohol can be bought in paint stores. Do not use rubbing alcohol, as most rubbing alcohol’s have baby oil or soap and other added ingredients that you don’t want on the bow hair. Separate the hair from the stick and clean hair. Alcohol will damage or remove varnish from the stick, so let the hair dry before attaching to stick. After the hair dries tighten the bow and rosin. Cleaning will help the hair to last for years. Anyone telling you to re-hair every 6 months, or any time less than 10 years is just after your money!

nakabili na ako ng denatured alcohol (tama ka nga mang jun yung bote parang yung bote ng San Miguel). ayun napag-experimentuhan ko na ang bow ko although me mga mali akong nagawa at nabasa yun bandang frog so mejo kumalat yung kulay ng varnish dun sa dulo ng hair :lol!: pero effective nga sha, talagang na-mute yung bow pagkatapos. :D

ginamit ko na din yung pansanlang rosin! hmmm. in fairness nga parang mas maganda nga sha talaga dun sa tipak na kasama ni nanding. :flower: wehehehe.

hehe yung sakin kasi, gusto ko talagang mawala lahat ng rosin ng bow kasi gusto ko malaman kung may difference yung bagong rosin na binili ko. :D in fairness meron nga!

ah yung mga tirang rosin sa bow mo natutunaw sa sobrang init kaya nagdidikit yung hair nyan.. haha.:)

The way I do it is, I use johnson baby shampoo(no more tears- you heard me right c'',)) ... sa luke warm na water to wash my bow hair...

I dont use alcohol etc... dont use strong detergents like laundry bar or joy ultra...

Tapos punasan mo sya with dry towel.. pa air dry mo... make sure na loosen up yun screw.. kapag tuyo na, suklayan mo para di sya buhol buhol

Not really that advisable to wash teh bow hair kasi... better have it rehaired.

Ensure na di mabasa yun bow stick mo...

@pikachoi.. yup! kinalas ko muna yung hair tapos sobrang paunti unti lang nilalagay ko sa cloth na alcohol.. tas nung pinapatuyo ko sya, para lang akong nangingisda para di dumikit yung hair sa bow.. haha! pag ginagamit mo si baby shampoo.. smooth naman sya after?

ang bow hair kasi ay walang pinagkaiba sa buhok natin...you just wanted to remove rosin... without making any damage sa hair like getting too dulas.... parang na rinse lng cya sa water kapag johnson baby shampoo gamit mo... wag mo damihan din un tama lng sa luke warm na water(aligamgam)

This is how the professionals do it ...walang shampoo... done in less than 10 mins. >>>>>

from my violin luthier friend fr TN who advised me, long time ago...

you can use denatured alcohol or xylene(pretty scary though)... then water and baby shampoo.

I skipped the alcohol and xylene since baby shampoo works perfectly.

Anyhow, I dont wash my bow hair anymore... all you need to do is to have it rehaired which is way better

Re-hairing is expensive. If one has lots of cash and can easily spare some for rehairing then it is not a problem. But i don't see the merits of constant re-hair if it's only dirt that is on the bow hair.

Something "major major" like a re-hair in my opinion is for instances like decimated hairs on a bow rendering it unplayable etc.

One would not replace the floor of a house simply because there are dust bunnies around....

Cleaning with denatured alcohol will dry your bow hair faster which will make it brittle in the long run. If you try check it out after rinsing on alcohol, residue is still sticking on your horse hair. That is why you find your horse hair after doing this procedure to be sticking to one another in tangles. Unless you add Xylene as told by my violin luthier friend from TN.

That is why we use baby shampoo in luke warm water.

The procedure above can't be repeatable, thus will affect your bowing due to lesser grip of the bow hair.

Re-hair is normally around less than 1000php here in the country compare to 100usd in California.

Normally done for at least once a year or every 6 months for professional players who play alot.

It is part of the maintenance that we should be aware of... c'',)

pikachoi... question.. there are variants of 'no more tears' baby shampoo... i think there are at least 4 kinds... which is more suitable? baka may bumili ng milk bath na no more tears.. hehe!
