Professor Esmilla will forever and foremost be the ultimate, the epitome of a violinist and an artist and a gentleman - at least, in my mind. I had a hard time looking for the right word... seems like "violinist" was too small a word to describe him.

I was hungry for lessons because I don't have a teacher here where I live, in the third bundok from the right, next to the wide river.

I begged his daughter, the equally great Ma'am Mayos, for a single lesson while I was in Manila, and she kindly agreed... but lo and behold, when I went to UP, her father was there, "substituting" for her.

I played for him a few sorry notes on my violin - I think it was the beginning of an exercise from the book I was using at that time. When I stopped, he had his head bowed down, his hand covering his face. It must have been supremely painful for him to listen to all of that. But he let me go on, probably to see what needed tackling at that time.

He then tried to cover all the basics I was lacking at that point, which was pretty much everything.... from bow hold (fingers/wrist should be flexible, like a brush) to pressure on the strings... it was the fastest one hour I've ever experienced. I wish I had it on tape.

And he imparted all of these with a kind fatherly tone.

Sigh.

I hope he will allow me to have a few more lessons in the future!

Sayang. If only Promil was invented during my childhood AND I had him for a teacher, siguro Suzuki book 3 na ako ngayon....

To Professor Emilla, Sir, I hope you realize how much you mean to other people, and how much of an impact you have on others. All the best, Sir, and may you have many more years of enjoying and imparting the joy of music to others.

Ron

I know the frustrations of handling beginners na students.... That's why may mga teachers na talagang namimili.

Sa case ko... nung student ako.... I make sure na hindi masyado mafrustrate yun teacher ko by doing my assignment.

If you are dedicated, then you have to challenge yourself to compete against your own standard. CHase against time...

Joseph Esmilla <3 JE-pic

Joseph Esmilla, violinist - started violin lessons at age five with his father, Sergio Z. Esmilla, Jr. At 14, he was granted a scholarship at The Juilliard School where he eventually received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees under the tutelage of Dorothy DeLay, Masao Kawasaki and Jens Ellerman. While doing post-graduate work in violin and chamber music with Felix Galimir at the Mannes College of Music, he won the concerto competition and performed the Bruch G minor concerto which was later broadcasted by WQXR in New York City. Subsequently, he pursued professional studies in violin and chamber music with Arnold Steinhardt and John Dalley of the Guarneri Quartet. He participated in summer festivals and programs such as Aspen, Interlochen, Dartington and the International Summer Academy at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, where he was chosen to play the Tchaikovsky violin concerto for the culminating concert.

Mr. Esmilla has performed extensively as a recitalist and chamber musician in the Philippines, USA, Germany, Austria, Malaysia and South Korea and has been featured soloist in numerous occasions performing concertos from the standard violin repertoire with the Manila Symphony, Philippine Philharmonic and Manila Chamber orchestras. As an orchestral musician, he was concertmaster of the Manila Symphony Orchestra and the Detmold Kammer Orchester and was concertmaster and associate conductor of the Manila Chamber Orchestra. For the past eight seasons he has been a violinist with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. Throughout the years of maintaining a concert career, he also served as a faculty member of the University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, Towson University, Elizabethtown College and Shippensburg University as music director and conductor of the University/Community orchestra for the 2007-2008 season.

Highlights of his recent performing activities include concerts with the Eaken Piano Trio as guest artist, performing the violin solos in the Harrisburg Opera production of Lehar's "Paganini", concerto soloist with the Cleveland State University Orchestra, Shippensburg Festival Chamber Orchestra, and recitals in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. He has recorded a CD of encore pieces entitled Sentimyento released by Bookmark Audio label and Concierto para Trio as violinist of Triode for Northbranch Records. Aside from having been the violinist of Triode, he is a sought after chamber musician and is active in the chamber music scene in the Central PA region. He performs on a violin by J. F. Pressenda of Turin, circa 1830.

Listen to this YouTube performance of Maestro Joseph Esmilla and be amazed.

"Oblivion", Esmilla (violin) in TRIODE

He has been described simply as "the best violinist of his generation." I'm a fan of this very talented family. Mabuhay ang pamilyang Esmilla! you are one of the Philippine's cultural treasures.

And one more time, performing Polonaise Brilliante together with Maestro Golez on the piano...

Concert brings back golden age of violin music in PH

http://ph.yfittopostblog.com/2010/11/08/concert-brings-back-golden-age-of-violin-music-in-ph/

Joseph Esmilla <3 600vera_esmilla-1

By Pablo A. Tariman, Vera Files
For Yahoo! Southeast Asia

The coming concert of violinist Joseph Esmilla with the Manila Symphony Orchestra in Cebu City on November 12 is as good a time as any to reflect on the golden age of violin music in the country.

Esmilla will introduce the rarely played Korngold violin concerto for the Cebuano audience. He earlier premiered it in Manila to positive reception. He has also played the Sibelius violin concerto with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

The violinist who was away from Manila’s concert scene for many years proved he was more than just in good shape. He actually has a lot to offer artistically. In his last recital, his Brahms and Strauss sonatas were rock solid in execution and critics said his playing has acquired a new luster.

Esmilla is the crucial link between two generations of violinists in the Philippines. He started violin lessons at age five with his father, violinist and conductor Sergio Esmilla, Jr., as his first teacher.

He was also mentored by Oscar C. Yatco and Basilio Manalo, who were the first Filipino violinists to enter The Juilliard School where the young Esmilla received his Bachelors and Masters of Music degrees under the tutelage of Dorothy DeLay, Masao Kawasaki and Jens Ellerman.

Diomedes Saraza, Jr.

Like Esmilla, Diomedes Saraza, Jr. made it to The Juilliard School this year and emerged as one of the two top freshmen of the school.

Saraza figured in an electrifying “First Violin Concerto” by Paganini with the Manila Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Christopher Poppen before the earlier landmark performances of Esmilla and Joaquin Maria “Chino” Gutierrez.

Chino Gutierrez

The last recital of Gutierrez, a prizewinner of the National Music competition for Young Artists, was equally astounding as that of Esmilla with a demanding repertoire of unaccompanied Bach and rarely heard sonatas of Robert Schumann and Eugene Ysaye.

Gutierrez is the great-grand nephew of Ernesto Vallejo, the country’s first violin prodigy.

The concerts of Esmilla, Saraza and Gutierrez brought back cherished memories of the unforgettable era of the violin in the country.

Long before Esmilla’s time, the country has heard violin greats, which attested to the wide following of violin music in the country. Russian violinist Mischa Ellman was in Manila in the 1920s, followed by Jascha Heifetz in the 1930s, Yehudi Menuhin in the 1940s, Ruggero Ricci, Gidon Kremer, and Vladimir Spivakov in the 1970s, and Victoria Mullova in the 1980s.

Esmilla’s father, Sergio, Jr., was only 21 when he graduated from the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Music where he played in the first violin section of the orchestra that accompanied Menuhin, who was soloist in the Mendelssohn concerto.

According to the older Esmilla, Menuhin gave approximately eight recitals at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Gym, Holy Spirit in Mendiola, St. Cecilia Hall at St. Scholastica’s College, among others.
Menuhin was the first internationally renowned violinist to visit the country after World War II.

“From what I learned every concert was full house and that goes to show how high the interest in classical music was at that time,” the younger Esmilla recalled.

The Manila engagements of Kremer (he played with pianist Cecile Licad in one music festival in Germany three years ago) were courtesy of the National Philharmonic Society then headed by Redentor Romero, one of the country’s violin personalities.

Romero, who also became active as conductor and impresario, had taken extra efforts to bring into the country violin greats from abroad because he himself started his career in music as a violinist. A member of class ‘45 of the UP College of Music, Romero began his violin studies at age six and became concertmaster of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra at age 18.

He turned to full-time conducting and became the first Filipino to conduct the Moscow Symphony, the London Philharmonic and the Beijing Philharmonic, among others. Romero’s contemporaries included Yacto and Esmilla’s father.

The late Manalo, who was behind the new batch of violin players of the new Manila Symphony Orchestra, opined that the new generation of musicians was a “thousand times” better than their predecessors.

Joseph Esmilla can only vouch for the dedication of the new generation of violinists represented by Saraza, Jr.

He recalled: “Thirty three years ago, I played my first full length recital at Philamlife Theater. The proceeds of that concert paid for my plane ticket to fly to the USA to audition at Juilliard.
He continued: “For me, Saraza is the best of the young generation although quite under-rated in our country. He happens to be the first Filipino to get accepted to Juilliard since I finished my Masters Degree in 1988. That’s quite a milestone!”

Esmilla is indeed a formidable link between the old and new generations of violinists in the country. He carries what both sides of the generations hold dear: passion, dedication and astounding musicality.

(VERA Files is put out by veteran journalists taking a deeper look at current issues. Vera is Latin for “true.”)
