PostSubject: The differences in Violin: Student entry - Advance/professional - Master   The differences in Violin: Student entry - Advance/professional - Master EmptyMon Nov 08, 2010 9:14 am

Greetings everyone. I have some questions here and I scanned past threads but didn't saw it... perhaps I missed.

Any how, I was just thinking the other day, what are the differences between these types of violins? Entry - Advance/professional - Master. for instance:

The wood used : are the entry level violins are made from plywood? while the advance is 50/50 solid & plywood and the master level violins are made from solid wood?

The sound : Good selection of solid wood makes an instrument produce better and louder sounds.

Craftmanship : light weight, easy to grasp and play? entry level have basic violin features, while the advance and master level violins have fancy designs for presentation?

Varnish : Entry level have this sprayed lacquer-like varnished, while the advance and master are hand varnished[spirit or oil] which is pretty sensitive compared to the entry level but produce much better sounding instrument.

Types and brand : mass produced factory brand names, Workshop handmade by the master luthiers "assistants" and finally the master luthier's solo handmade violins which he would sign it himself.

Price : Handcrafted are far more costly than factory produced.

Basically those are just my ideas and not to be taken as facts. I would like to hear from an experienced violinist about these matters, or if you are a Pro so much the better :D

ABOUT THE PLYWOOD THEORY:

I am not belittling any less expensive violins since I am using one myself, but as an enthusiast I have to know and understand my instrument.

30k pataas ang solid guitar, maliban pag may nag benta ng mas mura na 2nd hand :) depends on the dealer and buyer.

iniisip ko lang kung naa-apply ito sa mga violin, since may nakikita ako na 6k and below, bakit kaya ganun ka mura? dahil nga ba eh plywood? hinde ko rin alam ^^;

That and about the machine made violins is what had prompted me to this.

The differences in Violin: Student entry - Advance/professional - Master M083
Since, Plywood is a Sandwich of Glue and Criss Crossing thin Woods.
The differences in Violin: Student entry - Advance/professional - Master M174

.... After 5 minutes....

for the violins

But I think There is a
Big Difference in Violin The differences in Violin: Student entry - Advance/professional - Master 23713

if it is a machine made we can manus the labor cost and also if the materials
are cheaper we can also manus that..
for Example
Cheaper Violins:
Machine made- Less Labor
low grade materials like Hide glue and Varnish,
Machine made Violins are Usually Shined by Machines Another Manus on Labor
and Machine made Violins are made Batch by Batch so More Production means
More Money input but Less in Cost..

Hand made Violins:
Painstakingly made means more Labor Cost
Hide Glue are moslty High grade(Coslty)
Sometimes Luthiers themselves Have their own Recipies of Hide Glue
Also the Varnish is usually Highgrade
Luthiers Shine the Violins Mannually ( Elbow grease) and
With a Shinning Oil that is Costly
Luthiers ensure the Sound Quality of every Violin
it means Every Violin that is made is Unique Despite of Their
Appearance..
Labor and Transportation cost ehehe!

Thank you Roland for the info :D

he he he, mukhang galing ka rin sa Cremona no? ganun din nangyari sa akin noong 1996 first time ako nagsubok ng violin, kumakapit sa panga at leeg ung kulay ng chinrest, at ang sakit pa sa tenga nang tunog, medyo gumanda ng binakbak ko ung varnish ^^; natigil ako nang pumutok ang tail piece na plastic... tinamad nang maghanap ng piyesa.

ahmmm although they are both string isntrument magkaiba po ang dynamics ng violin. Sa guitar pag wala pong bilog sa gitna malakas paren tunog kasi mostly ang sound niya to produce ay my indirect contact. When the strings vibrate, the vibrations travel through the saddle to the bridge to the soundboard. The entire soundboard is now vibrating. The body of the guitar forms a hollow soundbox that amplifies the vibrations of the soundboard.. Second is that Ang violin ngkakaroon ng sound sa vibrations ng string from bridge to soundpost. Fholes help make the front plate of the body more responsive to the vibrations of the strings because they create a small area of very flexible material directly underneath the bridge. The f-holes also allow air inside the violin to act upon the air outside the violin, which lets the body cavity act as an amplifier for sound.. Sa guitar walang soundpost. Kinuwentohan din kasi kami ni Mang Angel about this, sinabi niya malayo kasi dati nag ecperimento din sia sa mga guitars. HE even tried to put a sounpost sa guitar. XD

Saka kung papansinin naten ang setiup kya di msydong dependent ang guitar sa wood ay dahil ung structure ng guitar. although meron din sia bridge maliit lang ung right triangle which makes it a little bit of wood independent. Unlike sa violin 1/4 ng length ng violin ay nsasakop dun sa right triangle action ng bridge to tail piece. pag plywood na violin too much hole/poores in it will make it sound dull.

Maybe for the ribs they are using plywood pero sa top and back malabo lalo nmn sa neck at scroll. Kaya lang nmn mura ung ibang violins. Most likely dahil hindi tonewood saka Craftsmanship. Mostly machine made. Easy to reproduce, application ng supply and demand.

Yup2. But with poor craftsmanship, this results to uneven spread ng vibrations hence low projection.

Nah. Master Level Violins are not based on appearance. Actually this is what I've noticed Master = light weight, easy to grasp and play.
Entry Level = Frustrating. Xp

True. BUt there are hand varnished violins which sounded like entry level violins XD

my violin teacher is also a cello player and a luthier.Ang sabi niya maple wood is an ideal one pero depende sa weather/climate condition ng isang lugar and i read an article about a famous luthier abroad, nasa Alps daw makakuha sa ngayon ng best wood to make one.My teacher once used many varities of wood from here to make an alternative one but no avail.

@ Reds
I think it's Because of the Following Elements That's Why your Teacher that is also
What you said a Luthier Cannot Find an Ideal wood Material For Violin Making

1. Climate- We all Knew that Philippines Has only Wet and Dry Seasons
and Maple and other woods that are used to create a violin
Grew in Places that Has four Seasons,
and also Different Tree has different tonal Value and some have
none.

2.Soil- Soil Consistency in a Tropical Country is different than a four seasoned country
that is why they always Check for Acidity and Basicity of Soils in Different
country by a Ph meter. not only that they also Check for the mineral Content.
Mineral consistency also affect the woods structure.

3.Temperature- all trees are vulnerable to temperature fluctuation, a little decrease ( cold)
or rise(hot) can Affect the growth of a tree or plant it also can cause plant
death. That is why Many Scientists nowadays are trying to breed a different
kind of tree of the same Specie to coup to every kind of environment.

4. Cultivation- These trees are hard to cultivate in a different Environment
that is why even with a success to cultivate we cannot assure the
Quality of a wood for the sound that it can produce.

let's say Sakura Violin ahihih..

Quote :
Pro+ Violins

This level of violins provides the greatest value for the price paid. At USD350-550, it fits into the budget of most people. At the higher range of the price, it is fitted with the same fittings as the Master models. But the price is kept down by the use of Chinese or Russian maple. The price is lower not because they are inferior, but because they are nearer for me to buy and so the logistic costs involved is much less.

Cheap Violins for Sale Are Not a Good Deal
November 4, 2010 at 9:44 PM

If you are new to the violin, you might be tempted to buy one of the low-priced violins advertised all over the Internet – by low-priced I mean anything under about $300.

Don't do it.

Having a cheap violin will make an already-difficult skill even more difficult to learn and will cause persistent frustration in your practice. Your violin will refuse to be in tune, the angle and placement of the strings will be off, the tone of the instrument will be squeaky and unappealing, and the tuners will likely bend and break....

Sometimes (but not all the time) People who tend to start with a CHEAP violin appreciates a well made violin more. There are people I know who can make a cheap violin sound like a $500 dollar violin using only a a cheap $80 violin and a crappy bow.. It's more on the player not the instrument..

Lets face it, this is the Phil. and not most average family would spend $400 for their child's first instrument.. An average employee with average salary would even think twice for that amount on his first (hobby) violin..

Nasa choice of buying lang yan.. Good thing, many members here in PV have tried buying from offshore sellers and have a first hand experience on their products.. So for those who want to invest on their first instrument, feel free to ask the opinions of these people. They can suggest a seller who sells violin that's a "Bang for the Buck"! ^__^ The differences in Violin: Student entry - Advance/professional - Master 760439

@angus

Thanks for the insights. Highest ba ang Master, then Pro+ na ba or Concert muna? Hay! Kailangang mag-ipon, haha.

I approve. Parang yung sabi ng teacher ko, not everything that is expensive is supposed to sound good. Sabi rin niya yun, and I agree.

@angus, all

I think is this is all just fancy nomenclature... pero wala naman talagang pagkakaiba.

Pero if we take the three literally (as in sa letra lang)

Pro - pwede nang ipang hanap buhay, then
Concert - pwede nang makipag tagisan (concertare - to compete)... kayang mangibabaw sa isang orchestra - kayang magsolo at makipag sagutan with the orchestra, then Master.

eto lang masasabi ko. I started with cheap violin and I was happy because I was able to produce good sound on my cheap violin. Mas maganda na mapaganda mo ang tunog ng mga cheap violin, it means you're ready for a higher quality of violin (in terms of antiquity and taste of the player).

@Tr Liza
I approve. Ako rin, after my student violin, kapag magaling na ako, hehe, isang magandang modern violin na ang bibilhin ko. Antiquity is not my thing, kahit pa sinasabi nilang lalo raw gumaganda ang tunog ng violin kapag tumatanda.

Ako kasi sa simula pa lang I resolved not to buy an antique violin. Unang-una, financial constraints. Pangalawa na nga yung pag-aalaga.

If the cheap violin has good craftsmanship then its ok. According to jeje, he knows people who are able to produce good sounds using a cheap violin and a crappy bow.

What if your cheap violin has poor craftsmanship? the curvature of the fingerboard is wrong.
the slits on the nut are not even. the pegs dont perfectly fit the pegbox making it hard to tune. the angle of the neck is wrong. fake painted purflings.

I will not fall in love with this kind of violin. I will be more frustrated in practicing using this kind of violin.

Thanks to Chinese violin makers, we in the 3rd world country can get a chance to taste and experience the wonders of violin music. And they make good quality violins at an affordable price!!!

^add ko lang, aside from good craftmanship dapat good quality wood ang ginamit, para sure na habang tumatagal, lalong gumaganda tunog.. or let's say, mas mataas ang lifespan kesa sa atin.. hehhehe

There are expensive violins that have poor craftmanship. I know someone but I am not saying; it's too controversial. The differences in Violin: Student entry - Advance/professional - Master 868891

for a less fortunate who cant afford at first a high end student violin, this kind of cheap violin (though some or should i say most are low quality) is a blessing for them, they are given a chance to experience learning violin even though that the violin is pangit in totality, sound, craftmanship etc, lahat naman dumadaan sa hirap, not everyone can buy an expensive and quality one, saka napag aaralan naman yan, kumbaga, low quality violin parang barbel, ung weights na nilalagay un ung mga imperfection dun sa violin or obstacle like uneven fingerboard, bridge, soundpost, wood, varnish, pegs na parang pag inikot e parang pinupunit na yero pati ang sound etc,. pag nag advance ng konti at nakabili ng better na violin sa palagay ko madali lang na masanay sa violin na wala ng sagabal di katulad ng unang violin mo na chipipay,. siguru naman halos lahat tayo nag start sa mababa, nag start sa cheap na violin, basta matutuhan, saka na bibili ng mas mahal, diba? now na magaling kana, ofcourse you're now using high end violin, but we should be thankful to that cheap violin, if all violins are handmade and sempre it will be so mahal, do we think marami satin ang makaka experience ng violin?, haha, and di lumingon sa pinanggalingan, di makakarating sa paroroonan, pero di ko naman sinasabi na advance player kana tapos mag iinvest kapa ng cheap na violin, hindi ganun hahaha, ang haba ata ng sinabi ko? hahaha

Wow thank you all for the information.

Errrr TalBlaiser,

you also have to know that when you play in a "bukid" i think you mean "mountain" or "basakan/daruhan" (taniman) ... there are no walls where the sound can bounce off and "get carried around."

Here's a video to give you an idea. >>>

Again i'm quoting Baroque settings in acoustics etc... ek ek ... usually kasi they play inside Palaces and Salons ... Imagine mo ang acoustics ng isang hotel... magbabounce off yung sound waves... at magkakareverb.

By the way ... trees and plants are a good sound insulation ... durog at basag kagad ang sound waves...The differences in Violin: Student entry - Advance/professional - Master 02

@ baroqueviolin: Exactly my point sir, thank you very much!

The same way goes to the violin.
