Ida plays Sarasate (Schlomo Mintz, Vadim Gluzman and other "de calibre" violinist are amongst the audience)

Aged 3 1/2 she takes the violin of her older sister and plays a song her mother was singing
Aged 5 she wins the Hubermann Competition

1935: Aged 7 she becomes one of the finalists of the Wieniawski Competition winning the 7th Prize (1st Prize: Ginnette Neveu, 16; 2nd Prize: David Oistrakh, 27)

1952: She moves to Montreal

1957: She premieres Luigi Dallapiccola's Tartiniana Seconda

1970: Publication of her autobiography Woman with Violin

1979: She moves to Miami, USA, and settles there

1982: She is the recipient of the Sibelius Prize for her distinguished performances of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Sibelius, at one time, praised her performance of his concerto after listening to a radio broadcast of the work.

1989: First performance in Germany of Allan Petterson's concerto for violin

1991: She is given by the English Queen the title of a Commander of the British Empire

1993: Appearance with the Berliner Philharmonic Orchestra in Berlin

2000: She is given by Prince Charles an honorary doctorate of the Royal College

Notes:

1. Several sources state 1923 or 1924 as Ida Haendel's birth year. In the interview by Erika Habenicht she attributes the origin of this misunderstanding to her manager in 1937. While being in England at 9 years of age, short before a Sunday afternoon concert, someone said no child under 14 is allowed to work and therefore to perform on Sunday. In order to rescue her appearance her manager replied she was actually 14, and only for promotion reasons they tried to pass her off as being younger.

Career

Ida Haendel was born in Chełm, a small city in Eastern Poland. She took up the violin at the age of three and as a seven-year-old was admitted at the Warsaw Conservatory. She later studied with Carl Flesch and George Enescu in Paris. During World War II she played in factories and for British and American troops. Her career developed after the end of World War II. Her autobiography, Woman with Violin, was published in 1970. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1991. Haendel has lived primarily in Miami, Florida for many years and is actively involved with the Miami International Piano Festival.

She has the reputation of being as accomplished and brilliant a violinist as Yehudi Menuhin and Isaac Stern; but has said that had she been more photogenic, she would have been as famous.

Ida Haendel's recording of the Sibelius Concerto, with Paavo Berglund and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, is a highly acclaimed interpretation of that work.

Ida Haendel has said that she has always had a passion for German music.[6]. In 1948-49 she recorded Beethoven's Violin Concerto, with Rafael Kubelik conducting the Philarmonia Orchestra. In 1993 she had her concert début with the Berlin Philharmonic. Germany's female star virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter craves her opinions and Maxim Vengerov regards her with awe.

Other acclaimed recordings are her renditions of Brahms' Violin Concerto (including one with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sergiu Celibidache) and Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra conducted Basil Cameron.

In June 2009 Haendel appeared on a Channel 4 television programme entitled The World's Greatest Musical Prodigies in which she advises 16 year old British composer Alexander Prior on which children to choose to play his composition.

She is a remarkable artist. A friend of mine in Germany who works as the festival director for the Schlewig-Holstein Music Festival once told me that Ida Haendel possesses the zest and humor. :-)

I think she has a documentary sa youtube.

Napanood mu na yung performance niya by Sarasate? I forgot the title but it was glorious.

Usually I incline more to male violinists (no offense sa mga babae dito ha!)...but Ms. Ida Haendel is an exception!

Ang lush ng tone nya...parang ginigiling ka sa loob mu.
