| I just stumbled over this topic on another forum and I think it is very helpful.. (kasama na din awareness) It is about the squeaky E string! causes and cures (point of view of a luthier) 1: Poor bowing technique. If the bow's not square to the strings, it's likely to squeak. Correcting the bowing angle helps a lot. 2. Poor rosin. The $2 rosin that often comes with student instruments can be prone to squeaks, and an upgrade to a good inexpensive rosin like A&B or Hill Dark often cures the problem. 3. Sound post. A poorly fitted sound post can make a violin squeaky on most or all of the strings. Refitting or replacing the sound post can often correct that. 4. Sometimes an E string can squeak during string crossings from the A or D, especially in third position, and seemingly no amount of tweaks can make this go away. Switching to a wound E can usually remedy this, although it can also be overcome with technique. Changing strings is easier. Those were his thoughts off the top of his head, and sounds about right in my experience. There might be more later. Michael R source: http://www.fiddlehangout.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1101 |

| Other reasons not already mentioned as to why the open E string squeaks: - Some part of most likely the index finger is slightly touching the string Solution: really examine left hand position - it's just a bad E string day [blame barometric pressure, humidity, etc. Solution: approach the open E for the first split instant with a deliberately crooked bow and with extra pressure, to wrench it into speaking - it's just a bad string Solution: try changing the string. Fortunately the E string is the cheapest and the quickest to break in I have also heard that the solid E strings, as opposed to the wound E strings, are slightly less prone to problems like this. I completed my Master's Degree in Viola Performance prior to ever playing a violin, and, boy, what a shock that squeaky E was when I encountered it in the first violin lessons I gave. The A string, which is the highest string on the viola, NEVER squeaks like that! Best Wishes, Ruth Bronswww.things4strings.com |

| My E String Usually Squeals and I am Trying to Change my bowing technique and making it more right it has a good result but the Squealing still occures but not always I think i will try to change my Rosin to a Eudoxia and also buy a New String before I bring my Violin to a Luthier to Set- up the Sound post or the Bridge Like Mr. Lionheart Said All our Gratitude to Miss Ruth and She is Right about the Index Finger is slightly touching the E String |

| Also, The E string squawks when it is not successfully set spinning into vibration, so some more things you can check/try are; 1. are you applying enough pressure when you enter the E string? 2. are you close enough into the bridge, where it works to apply more pressure 3. is your bow momentarily NOT parallel to the bridge when you enter the E string -- being deliberately crooked with your bow for a split second when you enter the E string will actually result in MORE hair of the bow working to spur the string into properly vibrating. | Thank you Ms. Ruth for unlocking the mystery behind the E-String.
Would you have more designs for the bow hold? Would there be a problem when the bow accessory is removed for example the grip is removed also...
Anyway i will post this in the proper forum as this belongs to the E string. Thank you. |
