I'll start with mine. I bought my first violin recently (01/11/11) at JB store,, cheap one lng binili ko kse first time ko and i dont know what to look for in a violin, i already choose Cremona which is on sale that time, then right before I pay at the cashier, nglabas ng isa pang sample violin un clerk, Hofner Brand xa which is not sale that time, but when i first saw it i said WOW kse kht cheap price xa prang ang lakas ng dating sken nung violin. so I bought Hofner AS-040 at 4,880. i got 15% dc kht ndi xa sale, aun,, den the next they I bought Tuner (Cherub WST-550), pag uwe ko sa house, i was curious panu gamitn un tuner. so i tested it on my violin. tpus out of tune pla un violin kht it was just tune right after i bought it. then the worst thing that happen i was trying to tune my violin (very first try) i started with G , D, when i got in A before it even hit the right tune SNAP! my A violin just snap right on my face (OUCH!).. den my fone flex got broke too.. haha additional sharing moments..then kinabukasan bumili ako ng spare set ng string (ALICE BRAND) so ndi ko din alam kung mganda xa kse xa lng na inquire ko ng cheap price.. aun.. haha nahiya na ako mgshare amp.. grbe all happen within 1 week sa violin aun.. right now i dont have any proper lesson kse wala pa ako budget for it... tska i dont know san meron mgaling mgturo within makati area or malabon.. i am just reading a violin book that i bought in national bookstore pero some terms tlgang ndi ko maitindihan tska i dont know how to translate notes that much.. den sumtimes i watch some guide videos at www.violinmasterclass.com which very in formative.. tska d2 ako ng babase sa pagprapraktis ko.. i do the exercise in the videos.. until i dont have any teacher yet.. Question: 1. those my violin ok in term of quality at price? kung cnu man nkakita ng gn2 model.. 2. what have i done wrong bkit everytime i use my violin its getting out of tune? 3. ok lng ba un alice brand for my violin string? 4. any suggestion for my practise until wala pa ako teacher? 5. any comments nmn sa mga akin wild week experience? haha Thanks sa pagtyatyaga sa pagbabasa sa story ko pasenxa na wala kse ako mshare about sa violin dahil wala ako kilala ngvioviolin.. anyway Thanks very much .. i hope some would share their experience in this thread |

| Hi Fox.. You may also want to introduce yourself in the First Hello Thread and then post the pic of your newly bought hofner violin in the PV Violin Showroom.. As of the moment, read more on the threads.. marami ka matututunan about violins, set ups, strings, accessories etc.. just browse the home page.. Sigurado marami tutulong sayo dito in time.. Also, attend EyeBall or meet with PV members here kung sino man makilala mong malapit sa inyo and don't be shy to bring your violin para maset up at mai-demo sayo.. Have fun.. On topic: I bought my first violin dahil lang nainggit ako sa Japanese violinist (Taro Hakase) ni Celine DIon sa To Love You More.. bigla ko naisip, gusto ko matuto nun.. the rest is history (tinatamad magtype) |

| My first violin is a Parrot. Then I had a Hofner, the Alfred Stingl model, which was a gift. I now use a Bachendorff. The Hofner is pretty good. One of my problems with it is, though, is its pegs. Really tight fit.
^clowreed11 posted a "Violin for Dummies" dito ah. Try that book. Very friendly yun sa mga baguhan. |

| Cremona student entry ang aking first violin noong 1996. Well to break it down:
but that is what I can afford during those times. Ito ang violin na pinag experimentuhan ko. Why the violin? hinde ko alam, talagang nagka interest lang ako dito. and after 14 years, ngayon lang ako nag seryoso.
About your questions:
1. those my violin ok in term of quality at price? kung cnu man nkakita ng gn2 model..
2. what have i done wrong bkit everytime i use my violin its getting out of tune?
3. ok lng ba un alice brand for my violin string?
4. any suggestion for my practise until wala pa ako teacher? Habang wala ka pang teacher, maganda na kapain mo na ung violin, makapag produce ka na ng simple melodies. at Full bowing exercises, from frog[bottom] to head[tip] then head to frog, wag ka titigil o hihinto hanggat hinde mo naaabut ang magkabilaang dulo ng bow. kumbaga talagang pagagapangin mo ung haba ng buhok ng bow sa strings. and one string at a time pag nag full bowing exercise.
5. any comments nmn sa mga akin wild week experience? haha No comments, I've seen much worst and weird kekekekeke!

EDIT: nakupo! may ibang tumtakbo sa isip ko, out na ako bago may masabi akong kakaiba he he he.

| @kanji Buti nga "for Dummies" lang, at hindi yung "For Complete Idiots" na series (although I have yet to see one "for Idiots" for violin). Hehehe!

| ^It happens to most everyone na hindi pa talaga sanay pero that is the only way for you to learn :) Pag nagkasa ng strings, may way ng pag ikot nun para hindi "masagasaan" at mag-cause ng pagkaputol.

| My first violin? 50/50. Why?
- Super taas ng chin rest, super sakit. (pero ayos din, I was able to train myself to hold my violin without shoulder rest) - Pangit ang tunog. No one believed that I can be a good violinist dahil sa tunog nito (pero there is one person who believed that I can be an excellent violinist. (pero I was able to train my fingers to hammer the strings and learn vibrato here) - Super cheap. I bought it for 1900 only.
ayan. |

beginners.. once a week i go to makati.
going back to the topic, mine was a Craftman... maganda xang beginner's instrument,

| My first violin was a Cremona I bought in 2000. I really, really loathed this violin because the pegs constantly slipped and the sound is so horrible. But I had to make do because I had no other choice. I used this violin for almost like 8 years and I almost came to the point of quitting the violin because I thought there was something wrong in my technique. |

| My first (and only) violin was a Bachendorff (inside was written Collectors Series II) bought in Raon last December 20, 2010. I took it as a present for myself... after years of hearing things like "pambabae lang ang violin, magdrums o gitara ka na lang" from my dad, i finally had the moolah to buy it without hearing nonsense.
I named it Mishka and the Bow Barry :)
(wala pa siya sa PV showroom e, haha will post soon!) |

| Ako rin !!! My first ever violin was a Cremona i bought for Christmas in 2004 for the bloody rock bottom price of 2000 PHP..... and i hated it !!! But i had no choice. It was the only model my limited funds would permit me. The varnish was not really varnish - it looked like lacquer and the scroll was not beautiful. Looking closely at high resolution pictures and online publications and essays of luthiers i quickly learned about ''factory made'' instruments. It was as jantigercat said very frustrating. Until i upgraded to my 2nd violin in 2006. Some PV members here are right when by saying that it's better to invest on a good instrument... if it weren't only too prohibitively expensive. I still have my 1st instrument and cannot bear part with it. After all, i have done many experiments of obsolete and ''risky'' baroque techniques with it like Scordatura and Low Bridge Placement. It's not even beautiful to display but i cannot give it away. .... ^_^ I feel a bit of bitterness how the entry level Cremona has improved when i was able to try other PV members' Cremona student violins ...

| @ baroqueviolin: laking Cremona pala tayo. Like you, I cannot give away my ol' Cremona. May senti value kasi. Plus I use it as a kind of guinea pig for violin set up experiments. Hehe
Chinese-made violins has improved a lot over the years...I have a prediction that in the coming years it will be so competitive na yung European and US luthiers will feel threatened by it. |

Off topic na, meron pa ba kayo napapansin na naglalako ng home made guitara ngayon? parang wala na ako nakikita kahit dito sa bulacan. siguro sa pampanga meron pa rin.
Ano kaya mag gawa tayo ng violin at ilako rin natin no he he he.
EDIT: better yet, bakit hinde nga tayo mag luthier din? saan kaya makakakita ng mga violin manual? may mga carpentry set na ako dito dahil iniisip ko gumawa ng guitara dati, + hahanapin ko ung mga sculpting knives ko he he he. |

2k something. Sabi ni tr. Liza ang 'ngo-ngo' daw ng tunog. By that time di ko alam ibig sabihin nya. Pero not bad for practicing.

| Hi to all, My first violin was a Lark which I bought from Raon... that was around 1992, if I remember the year right... I remember that It was the only matino violin there at the time that I bought it (of course, I did not know any better then, hehe)... For those who go to Raon, circa 1990s, most of the instruments that they want to sell a little higher than usual, nakabalot sa plastic, even with the bridge in position, although I don't know if they still do that today Well, tinawaran ko to the death hehe, because they wanted to sell it at a higher price... Comparing it to the other violins that the other shops had at the time, this particular Lark had a flamed back... All the other violins I saw noon, walang flames, plain lang sila, the wood looked so raw, parang balsa wood yung iba (balsa wood is also called Palo china, I think)... So that was the initial attraction... "Woooo, Tigre likod nito" etc.... And circa 1992, there weren't a lot of good instruments available then... Yamaha was selling these Yupangco branded violins that were just plain "Blech", for lack of a better term.... My mom was in the US at that time... And I remember humingi pa ako ng pambili ng violin sa Lola ko... Well, when my mom got back from the US, may dala syang pasalubong na Violin... A Strad-copy, german made, given to her by one of my Titas who had given up on the violin... And there, halata agad, nagmukhang kawawa yung Lark ko But I kept my old Lark for sentimental reasons (1st violin, etc.)... So now, I will probably have it upgraded... It has an ebonized fingerboard and pegs... Cube |

| ^Nice story.
Here's mine:
I've wanted to learn how to play the violin since High School which was around 8 years ago. I fell in love with the sound, the look, the way it is played, basically everything about it then. But! I didn't have the money to buy my own violin and, even more so, the money to pay a teacher. I thought then that my mom won't support it. Anyway, to make the long story short, it remained a dream for more than 7 years.
Then just recently, a new member of our church bought a violin. It turns out, he can already play quite well and he encouraged me to buy my own. The spark just turned into a flame and I asked a friend to lend me some money to buy a secondhand violin I found online. It's a 4/4 Bachendorff concert series. I got the money as soon as I asked for it.
I arranged a meetup with the seller right away. And it felt like it was God's birthday gift to me because the seller's mom agreed to give it to me on my birthday! Hay... I can remember so vividly the first time I laid my eyes on my violin and the very first time I played it. My churchmate said it sounds good or at least better than his.
It has only been 3 weeks since I got my violin but I can say that I am in love with it. I know there are many others that sound better than my Bachendorff but it will always be my puppy love violin. |

Haha. Anyway, back to the music store, once a week ata ako dumadaan dun pata hawakan yung violin. Haha. Bwahaha. Nakakahiya. Haha. Nakakatamad tuloy mag-practice. Hahaha. Yun ang aking pilgrimage pag nasa MOA ako or nasa Megamall. |
